I am witnessing dramatic shifts in my industry and my advisory role due to women’s rapidly evolving relationship to personal finance.
My favorite word right now is “curiosity”. In recent years, I have been curious about finding new and exciting ways to grow, learn and explore new angles through my financial advising practice. I am naturally a connector and relationship builder. I also happen to know how to navigate the world of finance and investments, however the link between the two has been for the most part missing in our industry.
There is a place we are all searching to find. It feels like home. It feels like total acceptance and rest. We take part in endeavors – – work, hobbies, church, travel…and we are searching for something that feels safe. Something that feels easy and flows. Sometimes you find it in the people you connect with. Sometimes you find it in your experience, your senses – the cool ocean breeze, the taste of the wine on your palate, the hymnal, the sounds of the bustling city or swoosh of the snow under your skis.
So, 4 days before the final, I bought a plane ticket and a seat to the US Open. I debated only an hour or so. I shouldn’t spend the money, I shouldn’t take the time away from all my duties, shouldn’t shouldn’t shouldn’t. But I did.
Even in a rough market. Even in a recession. Even with gas prices and travel costs at a high.
Early August is always an emotional time for me. I don’t know if it is the
suffocating heat and fluctuating barometric pressure, or the shortening days
signaling the end to the lazier ways of summer, but I tend to feel a little down and
fatigued this time of year.
We don’t just suddenly change. We evolve. The typical financial planning projections focus on retirement as a one off occurrence in our lives. One day we are gainfully employed, the next day we are sleeping in, having lunch at home and playing golf.
