Markets sold off almost $6.5 trillion in the past few trading days, shaking markets around the globe and the nerves of many investors. As of midafternoon today, the markets are recovering a good portion of those gains.

The VIX, Wall Street’s measurement for fear or volatility, has surged. What is causing this disruption? A number of economic factors, as mentioned in Jeremy’s piece today, a perfect little storm. How should we as individual investors react to this? Stay grounded and focused on the long term. We believe these are signs that the economy is slowing, but not headed for recession or worse.

If you have a solid financial plan in place and dedicated funding for meeting your goals, just stay the course. If you have money to deploy/invest, this is an opportunity! If you are taking income from your portfolios, how much are you distributing annually? Do you have 6-12 months in short term and cash like instruments? If so, no need to panic. You likely have time to ride out the storm. Stay grounded and rooted in confidence.

If you have a solid financial plan in place and dedicated funding for meeting your goals, just stay the course.

The practice of yoga is certainly a practice of mental and physical balance. When I am triggered by fear (typically due to uncertainty and having lived past traumatic experiences) I reach for the practice of yoga or meditation. It calms my mind. It is my grounding practice that reminds me I am okay. I still have my breath and I need not get carried away by the thinking mind or the wobbling body. It keeps me honest with myself.

Yoga also teaches us about the chakras in our body, focal points that transfer subtle energy. The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. It is the foundation on which we build everything else. It represents safety, security and stability. If it is functioning properly (moving energy through) we have financial wellbeing, we are not anxious about past decisions or fearful about the future. An imbalance may cause one to avoid money altogether or have feelings of scarcity which can lead to greed or destructive decisions.

Creating goals and developing a conscious spending and savings plan can create a healthy mindset around money and likely balance this chakra. Meditating with positive affirmations and breathing through certain poses to clear and balance the root chakra are not scientifically proven to create positive financial outcomes, but the combination of both of these behaviors and practices are likely to keep you feeling more positive and grounded during volatile times.

Creating goals and developing a conscious spending and savings plan can create a healthy mindset around money and likely balance this chakra.

As always, talking to a good financial advisor you know and trust about your customized plan will help you stay focused.

We want you to stay grounded, be bold and Love your Life!
